Rome, Barth. Grassi, 1585. Sm. fol. (paper size 30,9 x 21 cm, plate size ca. 23 x 15,5 cm). With engr. title (verso with printed privilege of Pope Gregor XIII), and 31 engr. plates by Giovanni Battista Cavalieri after Niccolò Circignani, all contemp. handcoloured and heightened with gold and silver. All prints under passe-partout in 19th century vellum portfolio with ties (front cover with two gilt borders & corner pieces).
- 2nd ed. of this series (1st 1583). – Cicognara I,2008; Mortimer, Italian, 126 (with 3 ills.), Brunet I,1697. – Niccolò Circignani (c. 1517/24-after 1596) was an Italian painter of the Mannerist period. After 1580 he decorated, with help from Antonio Tempesta, the church of Santo Stefano Rotondo in Rome. “Here he finally completed over thirty graphic scenes of martyrdom, depicting every gruesome method as if it were an advertisement for a torture chamber. Visitors like Charles Dickens, expressed horror at the spectacle in this church, calling it a: damp, mildewed vault of an old church in the outskirts of Rome, … by reason of the hideous paintings with which its walls are covered. These represent the martyrdoms of saints and early Christians; and such a panorama of horror and butchery no man could imagine in his sleep, though he were to eat a whole pig raw, for supper. Grey-bearded men being boiled, fried, grilled, crimped, singed, eaten by wild beasts, worried by dogs, buried alive, torn asunder by horses, chopped up small with hatchets: women having their breasts torn with iron pinchers, their tongues cut out, their ears screwed off, their jaws broken, their bodies stretched upon the rack, or skinned upon the stake, or crackled up and melted in the fire: these are among the mildest subjects.” (Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia). – A bit spotted in places. A very good/fine series, complete and contemp. handcol. hard to find.
