Circignani, N. and G.B. Cavalieri. Ecclesiae Militantis Triumphi Sive Deo amabilium Martyrum gloriosa pro Christi fide Certamina
Rome, Barth. Grassi, 1585. Sm. fol. (paper size 30,9 x 21 cm, plate size ca. 23 x 15,5 cm). With engr. title (verso with printed privilege of Pope Gregor XIII), and 31 engr. plates by Giovanni Battista Cavalieri after Niccolò Circignani, all contemp. handcoloured and heightened with gold and silver. All prints under passe-partout in 19th century vellum portfolio with ties (front cover with two gilt borders & corner pieces).
- 2nd ed. of this series (1st 1583). – Cicognara I,2008; Mortimer, Italian, 126 (with 3 ills.), Brunet I,1697. – Niccolò Circignani (c. 1517/24-after 1596) was an Italian painter of the Mannerist period. After 1580 he decorated, with help from Antonio Tempesta, the church of Santo Stefano Rotondo in Rome. “Here he finally completed over thirty graphic scenes of martyrdom, depicting every gruesome method as if it were an advertisement for a torture chamber. Visitors like Charles Dickens, expressed horror at the spectacle in this church, calling it a: damp, mildewed vault of an old church in the outskirts of Rome, … by reason of the hideous paintings with which its walls are covered. These represent the martyrdoms of saints and early Christians; and such a panorama of horror and butchery no man could imagine in his sleep, though he were to eat a whole pig raw, for supper. Grey-bearded men being boiled, fried, grilled, crimped, singed, eaten by wild beasts, worried by dogs, buried alive, torn asunder by horses, chopped up small with hatchets: women having their breasts torn with iron pinchers, their tongues cut out, their ears screwed off, their jaws broken, their bodies stretched upon the rack, or skinned upon the stake, or crackled up and melted in the fire: these are among the mildest subjects.” (Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia). – A bit spotted in places. A very good/fine series, complete and contemp. handcol. hard to find.

Matching pair of one terrestial and one celestial globe, both made by Thomas Bardin (1768-1819). Both made up of 12 paper gores in contemporary hand colouring (strengthened) over a hollow, plaster coated sphere. Brass meridian ring, divided in quadrants. In an English chair with papered horizontal ring, supported by four  baluster turned legs, united by stretchers.

Minor restorations to gores of the terrestrial globe. Chair of celestial globe renewed. Original colours refreshed. Else original and fine.

The father, William Bardin (1740-1798) began publishing globes in the early 1780. The most prolific publishers were William Bardin and Son, John Newton, John and William Cary and William and Al;exandre Johnston. The products of all these publishers excel in the detail of cartography and the quality of the stands (Christies, London, Nov 2002, page 20)

4 plates in later colour, inserted. All other plates and maps in  full, contemporary colour.

This copy is stained, thumbed and shows some (even) browning all through. About one fifth of the plates had (mostly marginal) tears and a four (plates 5; 8;13 and 21lacked small pieces that have been restored. The contemporary colouring has been refreshed using the pallet of the existing colours.

First edition, first issue of Hulsius’  version of the famous three voyages by the Dutch to find the North Eastern passage to Cathay (1594-1596) including Willem Barentszoon’s hibernation at Nova Zemlya. Complete

The very first edition of the story, published in Amsterdam in that same year (1598) carries a dedication, dated April 29, 1598 while the dedication in this first Hulsius edition is dated only fourteen weeks later:  August 10, 1598. This shows both the European interest in the book and the skills of Hulsius who had to translate the text, re-engrave the plates, print and bind the book and –in this case- had it coloured. The subsequent de Bry edition of the text only comes in 1601 (as part III of the small Voyages).
