An important and highly interesting manuscript illustrating the military history of French Flanders in the 2nd half of the 17th century, especially the history and development of the French fortification-system and -works in that region during the years 1677 - 1685, after the French advancement in the Spanish Low Countries.
The manuscript contains 18 copies of notarial writings, meticulously and neatly described, very legible, concerning the contraction of fortification-works, mainly at Dunkirk, St. Omer, the newly acquired Flemish territories such as Ypres, Cazal (and even Knokke), but also at Stenay and Sedan.
We join a 76-page booklet providing the index and the abbreviated contents of the manuscript, preceded by an illustrated introduction of the historical regional political situation related to the manuscript: Dunkirk, Flanders, Vauban and Louis XIV.
